リレーコラム（第１回） ～月に届くか？

会社創立から14年、日々私たちはさまざまな人々の声を聴き取り、文字にしてきています。医学分野の国際会議、自治体の情報公開推進に関する会議、その道では著名な研究者のインフォーマルな研究会、大企業の経営者の集う勉強会、原発の事故調査委員会、成功した経営者へのインタビュー、民俗学的な聴き取り調査・・・実にさまざまな声、声、声。
これらの声は何らかの媒体に録音されているとはいえ、誰かが聴き取って文字に固着しなければ、もしかしたら、それこそ宙に吸い込まれて消えてなくなっていたかもしれません。私たちのつむいできた文字は、人に読まれ、意思決定の役に立ち、また場合によっては、その後も長く人の目に触れることになっています。

あるクライアントからこんな声をいただいたことがあります。「アドレスさんはこんなに文字にしているのだから、それだけで一つの文化遺産だよ。百年後、二百年後に残さなきゃ。そうだ！文字データをハードディスクか何かに入れてそれを月に飛ばそう！そうすれば何百年後の人達が発見して、この時代のことが伝えられる。」実際のところは、文字化した文章を私たちが勝手に利用することはありえませんし、また情報の保護のために一定期間後に跡形なく処分しています。私たちの仕事は、放っておけば虚空に消えてしまいそうな声をしばし文字に定着させることにすぎません。
しかし、それにしても「月」とか「何百年後」とは、時空ともに何と雄大なことでしょうか。テンポラリーなデータの作成に日々追われる私たちからすれば、それらの文字データが、手を離れた後にひょっとしたら月や何百年後にまで届くかもしれないと、想像するだけで楽しくなってきます。

Can they reach the moon?

It has passed 14 years since we founded this company; we have listened to and transcribed various voices eagerly. International symposiums in medical field, conferences for promoting information disclosure by autonomies, informal workshops held by eminent researchers in the field, study sessions by executives of giants, accident investigation board of atomic power plant, interviews with successful executives, folkloric hearing, etc. We cannot tell you all but our coverage is so wide-ranging.
Although these voices are recorded by some media, they may vanish into nothing unless somebody catches them. Our transcriptions are read by people, play an important role for decision-making, or are seen by people for years in some cases.

One day, one of our clients said an unbelievable thing to us. "You have transcribed considerable amount of voices, that is another cultural assets of equal importance. You should leave them for coming centuries. Why don't you save all transcribed data into some media and send them to the moon? Then, people living in the future may find it, you can tell them about this age!"
Actually, it is impossible for us to use the data without asking and we properly dispose of them after a certain period of time to protect information. So we provide the data, which will be consumed in each case. To my regret, our job is kind of fleeting.
But how romantic the idea is! Our transcripts might reach the moon, and such temporary things can be eternal. Just imagining that possibility makes us free from busy moments and fills us with lots of excitement.
